Appearances Have No Address

Gaudapada Karika 4.51

When consciousness throbs, the appearances do not arise from anywhere else. When it is still, they do not go off elsewhere, and they do not enter it. Nor do they step out of consciousness, because they have no substance that could enter or leave. There is no relation of effect and cause between them and consciousness. For this reason they are always beyond thought.

Three words carry the teaching. Vijnana is consciousness, from jna, to know, with vi, apart or distinct, the knowing that shows each thing. Abhasa is appearance, from bhas, to shine: something that shows up without being shown to be solid. Dravyatva is substance-hood, the quality of being a real thing in itself, with a nature of its own. Gaudapada follows the firebrand image. A moving torch-tip shows a line or circle. Ask where the line came from, and the answer is nowhere but the torch. Ask where it goes when the torch stops, and the answer is nowhere. It never stood inside the torch waiting, and it never left. The appearances of consciousness are the same. They have no source elsewhere, no place to enter, no place to exit, because they were never things with substance. Without substance there is no cause and effect between them and consciousness, since cause and effect need two real things. So they are acintya, beyond thought: no account of how they come or go will hold. This answers the schools who ask what produces the world. Gaudapada's answer is that nothing produces it, and the question fails. Shankara reads this as the denial that appearances are a real effect of a real cause. Buddhist thinkers of his day, such as Vasubandhu, also spoke of mind-only appearance. The listener is asked to stop looking for the origin, since there is none.

A child waves a lit incense stick in the dark and a glowing ring hangs in the air. No ring was stored in the stick, none travels off when it stops, and no one can pick it up. Appearances stand to consciousness as that ring stands to the stick: shown, never made, never kept.

1. Tonight, wave a lit torch, phone light or incense stick in a dark room and watch the glowing line it draws. 2. Stop moving it. Ask honestly where the line went, and where it was before you moved the light. 3. Next time a worry or mood shows up this week, ask once where it came from and where it will go. Notice that you are looking for an address, and just watch it for a minute without hunting.

A man sits in a hospital corridor at two in the morning, waiting for a scan result on his wife. A dreadful picture keeps forming: the empty house, the phone calls. He chases it. Where did this come from, and how do I make it stop? Each answer he tries feeds it. The teaching would change the moment in steps. First he sees the picture as an appearance showing in awareness, without a stored source. Second he stops questioning its origin and its exit. Third he lets it pass as a torch-line passes, and notices the chair, the clock, his breath. Ordinary experience confirms that a frightening thought often fades faster when we stop arguing with it. The teaching does not say the result will be good, ease the fear of loss, or replace the doctors and the care his wife needs. It speaks of how appearances stand in consciousness, as the text teaches, and not of what any scan will show.
