A thing might cause a thing, or a different thing cause a different one. But for the things we meet in experience, neither thinghood nor difference can be made out. So things are not born of mind, and mind is not born of things. In this way the wise enter the non-birth of cause and effect.
Three words carry it. Dravya is a substance, something real that stands on its own. Dharma, from the root dhr, to hold, means the items of experience: a pot, a pain, a thought. Ajati is non-birth: a, not, plus jati, birth. Gaudapada argues in two steps. For one thing to cause another, it must be a real thing with its own standing, and it must be either the same as its effect or different from it. He says the items of experience have neither a standing of their own nor a real difference between them. So the schools' old quarrel has no ground to stand on. Does mind make the world, or does the world make mind? Each answer treats mind and world as two solid items, one handing birth to the other. Gaudapada says neither is born of the other. He teaches this to answer the debates over cause and effect. The wise, he says, do not win that debate. They walk into the place where the question stops. Nagarjuna and Vasubandhu also questioned cause and effect and the make-up of mind, and Gaudapada's argument sits near theirs. The commentators, Shankara among them, read non-birth as the final point of the whole Karika. The listener is asked to see that the question has no ground under it.
Picture a knot tied in one length of rope. Ask which loop made which, and the question has no answer, because the loops are the same rope. Asking whether mind made the thing or the thing made mind is like that: it treats one rope as two separate makers.
1. Tonight, notice one moment when you ask 'what caused this mood?' It may be a sour feeling after a message, or a heavy body after a long day. 2. Set the word 'because' aside for two minutes. Just list what is present: the tight chest, the thought, the room. 3. Notice whether the list stays calm without a cause attached. 4. Next time you catch yourself arguing 'it started with me' or 'it started with them', say 'it is all here now' and let the argument rest.
A woman lies awake at two in the morning with a knot in her stomach. She wonders whether worry has upset her stomach or her stomach is feeding the worry. She turns it over and over, and the turning keeps her awake. The verse would change that hour in steps. First, she would see that the question assumes two separate items, a mind and a body, one of which must have begun it. Second, she would drop the hunt for who started it and describe only what is present: a thought, a tightness, a warm blanket, a clock. Third, she would let the question lie unanswered, and the grip of the debate would loosen. Ordinary experience bears out one small part of this: worry and a tight stomach rise and fall together, and sorting out which came first is often impossible. The limit is plain. This does not cure a stomach complaint or an anxious spell. If the pain keeps returning, or the nights keep going sleepless, a doctor is the right person to see.
