As long as there is absorption in cause and effect, cause and effect go on arising. When that absorption has worn away, no cause and effect arise. As long as absorption in cause and effect lasts, the round of birth and death stretches on. When it has worn away, one does not enter that round.

Three words carry the teaching. Hetu is cause, the thing that brings something about. Phala is fruit, the result. Avesha is absorption: being entered into and taken over, the way a person is absorbed in a quarrel and can think of nothing else. Samsara is the round of birth and death, from a root meaning to flow along and keep moving. Kshina, the word for how the absorption ends, means worn away or exhausted, like a lamp running out of oil. Gaudapada says two things, each twice. While the mind is caught up in cause and effect, causes and effects keep arising for it, and samsara goes on. When that absorption is worn away, they stop arising, and samsara is not entered. The ending is not an act of force. The grip simply thins until nothing holds it. The reason is the question the chapter has been asking: if nothing is truly born, why does the world seem to run on one thing producing another? His answer is that it seems so because the mind clings to the pattern. The commentators read the teaching as being about this clinging, not about the working of daily life. The earlier verses lean on arguments close to those of Buddhist thinkers such as Nagarjuna, who also questioned whether a cause truly produces anything. Gaudapada uses them to reach his own point, that nothing is born. The listener is asked to see where the cycle is held: in the mind's habit of taking cause and effect as solid.

A child spins a stick tied to a ribbon and sees a bright ring in the air. The ring lasts exactly as long as the spinning. When the hand tires and slows, the ring thins and is only a ribbon again. Cause and effect seem to be a wheel, and the clinging mind is the hand that keeps it spinning.

1. Tonight, pick one worry that runs on 'because of this, then that'. A late bill, a sharp word, a missed chance. 2. Write the chain on paper, one link per line: this led to this, which led to this. 3. Beside each link, mark whether you know it or are only assuming it. Take five minutes. 4. Notice how it feels to hold the chain loosely while looking at it. Then put the paper away.

A man lies awake at midnight after a quarrel with his brother. He replays it. If he had not raised his voice, his brother would not have answered so, and the money would not now be in dispute. Each 'because' hands him the next one, and the chain has no end. The teaching reads this scene closely. The text says the round continues as long as the mind clings to cause and effect, and it ends when the clinging wears away. For the man, the first step is to see that he is the one holding the chain, link by link. He can ask which links he truly knows and which he supplies. He can notice that the replaying keeps the quarrel alive more than the quarrel itself does. As the grip loosens, the next 'because' arrives with less force, and he can act in the morning without being pulled by every link. The verse does not promise that the quarrel is settled, that the money is returned, or that the hurt is gone. Ordinary experience confirms only that a mind worn out from replaying is clearer after rest. Where sleeplessness or low mood lasts for weeks, a doctor is the right person to see.
