The Hub of Existence

Prashna Upanishad 2.6

Meaning · English

Just as spokes connect to the center of a wheel, everything rests in the vital breath: the scriptures, the rituals, the rulers, and the priests.

The vital breath is the central point that holds all aspects of life together. It does not just support the physical body, but also the intellectual and social structures of the world. This includes the knowledge found in the three Vedas, the act of sacrifice, and the two primary classes of society—the political leaders and the spiritual teachers. Without this central energy, these cultural and social pillars would have no foundation to stand on.

Think of a bicycle wheel. The rim is the outer edge, but it only holds its shape because the thin spokes pull toward the center hub. If the hub vanishes, the spokes collapse and the wheel fails. The vital breath is that hub, keeping the entire structure of reality from falling apart.
