So the one who knows what is truly worth having should not cling to women, nor to men who cling to women. The mind is shaken only when the senses meet their objects, and not otherwise. What is not seen and not heard raises no feeling in the heart. When a person does not set the senses working, the mind grows still and settles. Therefore no attachment should be formed with women, or with those fond of women, through the senses. Even for the learned, the band of six cannot be trusted. How much less for people like me?

Three small words carry the teaching. Sanga is attachment, from sanj, to stick to: the mind clinging to something the way cloth clings to a burr. Vishaya is the object the senses reach for, from vi-si, to bind: what is seen, heard, touched. Shadvarga is the band of six. The commentators read it as the six inner enemies, such as desire, anger and greed, or as the senses together with the mind. Either way it means the restless crowd inside that does not take orders. Pururavas speaks to himself, in Krishna's retelling, after years lost in longing for Urvashi. He has just seen his obsession for what it was. The harsh things he said about the body were his disgust at his own craving in that moment. They are not a verdict on women, and they are not meant to be carried as one. Now he states what he has learned about how the mind is shaken. It is stirred when a sense meets its object. What is neither seen nor heard raises no feeling. If the senses are not set to work, the mind goes quiet by itself. So he says to stay out of the way of the stirring, whether that is the person or the company that feeds the longing. Then comes his humility. Even the learned cannot trust the six inside them. He, who fell so far, has no right to trust them at all. It is taught here because his earlier verses explain what the obsession was. This one says how to keep it from returning. The text asks the listener for honest distance from whatever feeds the old pull, and for no pride about being immune.

A glass of muddy water on a table looks hopeless while a spoon keeps stirring it. Take the spoon out and leave the glass alone, and the silt sinks until the water is clear. The spoon is the senses meeting their objects. The mud is the mind, which settles when nothing keeps stirring it.

1. Pick one thing that reliably stirs an old craving in you: a person's page, a message thread, a shop, a place you pass. Do not look at it, listen for it or visit it for three days. 2. Each evening, spend two minutes noticing how loud the wanting was that day. Notice whether it was quieter than on the day before. 3. When the pull comes, do something with your hands for ten minutes, such as washing dishes or walking. Do not argue with the pull.

A man deletes a betting app on Sunday. At eleven on Tuesday night his phone lights up with a notification: a match is starting, with a special price. He has not thought about betting all day. Within seconds his chest tightens and his thumb moves. The teaching speaks to that moment directly. The wanting did not rise from nowhere. It rose when the sense met its object. So the first step is to remove the object from the path: turn off the notification, put the phone in another room, stay away from the friend who always has the app open. The second step is to let the wave pass without feeding it. Without a fresh sight or sound it tends to fade within minutes. The third step is to give up the thought that he is strong enough to keep looking. Pururavas does not trust even the learned, and a man who trusts his willpower least keeps the most distance. Ordinary experience agrees that cravings weaken when their cues are out of sight. The teaching does not promise that the wanting never returns, and it does not replace help from a doctor or counsellor when an obsession has taken over daily life.
