So the king, ruler of men, singing this, left the world of Urvashi. Seeing the Self within himself, he came to rest, his delusion shaken off by knowledge. Therefore, giving up bad company, the wise one holds fast to the good. The good themselves cut through the mind's clinging with words that lead to freedom.
Krishna is closing the story of Pururavas for Uddhava. Three words carry it. Moha is delusion, from muh, to be bewildered: the fog in which a longing looks like the whole of life. Jnana is knowledge, from jna, to know: here, seeing plainly what the craving was. Duhsanga is bad company, from duh, bad, and sanga, clinging or association. It means any bond that keeps the fog thick. Its opposite is sat, the good, the real. The story first. The king had spent years lost in longing for Urvashi. Then he came to himself. The hard words he spoke about the body, in the verses before, were his disgust at his own craving in that moment. They were not a verdict on women. He sang them aloud, left her world, and saw the Self in himself. Knowledge shook the delusion off and he came to rest. Then Krishna draws the lesson. Bad company is to be given up, and the wise person holds to the good. Uddhava is about to lose Krishna's presence, so he is told where steadiness comes from. The reason Krishna gives is that the good cut the mind's clinging themselves, through words that point to freedom. A person cannot always pull out of a craving alone. It asks the listener to notice which company feeds the fog, and which clears it. The commentators read the saints' cutting as done through their words and example, not by any power apart from them.
A man walks in thick fog along a harbour wall, certain the lamp ahead is his home. Someone who knows the quay calls to him from the dark, and he stops short of the water. The fog is delusion, the lamp is the craving, and the caller is the good company that cuts the mind loose.
1. Tonight, write down the two or three people or places after which you come away restless, drained or hungry for more. Look at the list for five minutes and stop. 2. This week, choose one person whose talk leaves you clearer and calmer, and spend an hour with them. Phone them if they are far. 3. Afterwards, note in one sentence what you noticed in your mind when you left them, and compare it with how you felt after the first list.
A man sits in his parked car at dusk, outside a house he has driven past every evening for months. Someone he once loved lives there. Dinner is cold at home. He tells himself he is only passing. The verse would change that moment in small steps. First he sees that the craving is a fog and not the whole of life, which is the knowledge that shook the king's delusion loose. Then he sees which company keeps feeding it: the old messages, the friend who says go again, the late-night corner of the mind. He leaves those and seeks out the person whose words steady him, perhaps someone who has been through the same and walked out. Krishna teaches that such a person's words cut the clinging. Ordinary experience confirms that a craving grows when it is fed and fades slowly when it is not. The verse does not promise that the longing ends that evening, or that grief for what is lost goes away. Where the obsession has become despair or is wrecking sleep and work, a doctor's help belongs alongside the good company.
