Saints look for nothing in return. Their minds rest in me. They are deeply calm and see all beings alike. They have no sense of 'mine' and no pride of 'I'. They are free of the pairs of opposites and own nothing. Among such greatly fortunate ones, O greatly fortunate Uddhava, talk of me rises always. It does good to people who take it in, and it washes away their sin.
Krishna has just told how Pururavas, after his long craving, turned to good company. Now he says what that company looks like. He gives a list of marks. Anapeksha means wanting nothing back, no favour, no praise. Prashanta means deeply settled, the stir gone out of the mind. Samadarshi means seeing all beings with the same eye. Nirmama is without 'mine', and nirahankara is without the proud 'I'. Nirdvandva means not tossed between pleasure and pain, honour and insult. Nishparigraha means holding nothing close as a possession. Above all, their minds are fixed on Krishna. Then comes the second half. Among these people, Krishna says, talk of him arises all the time. Such talk is good for those who listen with attention, and it clears away their wrong. Krishna names Uddhava mahabhaga, greatly fortunate, and calls the saints by the same word. Good fortune is the company itself. Why teach it here? Pururavas saw that craving could not be argued away alone. A person needs a place where a different kind of talk is going on. Krishna tells Uddhava what to look for, so he can tell a saint from a mere talker. Sridhara Svami reads the long list as describing people whose own minds are freed, which is why their words can free others. The text asks the listener to seek out such people and to listen closely.
A pot of water left in a cool cellar is cold when you lift it out, though no one chilled it on purpose. The saints are the cellar. Talk of Krishna is the coolness a visitor carries away, simply from being kept near people who are settled and want nothing from him.
1. This week, think of one person you know who wants nothing from you and is calm in a crowd. Note who comes to mind. 2. Spend twenty minutes with that person, in a visit or on a call. Say little and listen. 3. Afterward, sit quietly for two minutes and notice what in you has settled, and what has not. 4. If no one comes to mind, read a few lines about Krishna aloud, slowly, once today.
A man is sitting in a parked car outside his flat at night, phone in hand, scrolling a betting app for the fourth hour. He has lost most of a month's pay. He knows he should go in. He cannot make himself. The verse would change the next step, not the whole story. Krishna names people who want nothing from you and hold no scorekeeping over you. The man could think of one such person and call them, not to confess everything, only to talk. Their calm gives him something steady to stand next to, and a few ordinary words from them can interrupt the loop. Ordinary experience confirms that a craving feels loudest when we are alone with it, and quieter in the room of someone unhurried. The limit is plain. A single conversation does not end a gambling habit, repay the money, or replace a doctor or a counsellor where the habit has grown into illness. The text offers company as the beginning of a turn, not a cure on the spot.
