Three Places It Lives

Bhagavad Gita 3.40

Meaning · English

The senses, the mind and the intellect are said to be its dwelling place. Through these it bewilders the embodied soul, spreading a cloud over knowledge.

Three words carry it. Indriya are the senses, the doors of sight, sound, touch, taste and smell. Manas is the mind, which gathers what the senses bring and keeps turning it over. Buddhi is the intellect, the part that judges and decides. Krishna tells Arjuna that these three are the adhishthana, the seat or dwelling place, of the enemy named in the last two verses, desire. What gets clouded is jnana, knowledge. The deluding is a bewildering, the loss of one's bearings. The plain sense is that desire does not stand outside the person. It lives in the equipment used for seeing and choosing. Through the senses it is drawn to things, through the mind it keeps dwelling on them, and through the intellect it argues for them. The embodied soul, tied to a body, then loses sight of what it knows. Krishna gives this as the reason: Arjuna has been told who the enemy is, and now he is told where it hides, so the fight has an address. He is also warned that a strong wish can speak in the voice of reason. Shankara takes the dwelling place as the base from which desire clouds discrimination. Ramanuja reads the hidden knowledge as knowledge of the self, covered while attention is fixed on objects. Madhva also takes desire as the subject and reads the clouding as an obstacle to the soul's true knowledge.

A guest has moved into a house and now uses the front room, the sitting room and the study. He turns the lamps low, rearranges the books and talks all evening. The owner stops reading and just listens. Desire is the guest, the three rooms are senses, mind and intellect, and the dimmed lamps are knowledge.

1. Pick one craving that comes up today, such as a snack, a scroll through your phone, or a purchase you want. 2. Before acting, wait two minutes and name where it showed up: a smell or sight (senses), a replaying thought (mind), or a neat reason you gave yourself (intellect). 3. Pay most attention to the reason. Ask whether you would have thought of it if the wish were absent. 4. Then do what you decide, and note in one line what you noticed.

A man stands on a railway platform at ten at night, tired, after a long day away from home. The smell from a food stall drifts over, and his phone is already in his hand to order a second dinner he does not need. He has eaten, and he knows it. The verse asks him to look at how the wish is travelling. First comes the smell, which is the senses. Then the mind goes back to the taste again and again. Then the intellect arrives with its case: he has worked hard, he deserves it, tomorrow he will be careful. He may notice that the reasoning came after the wish and works for it. Seeing that, he can wait until the train comes, and let the pull rise and fall without obeying it. Then he decides. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness weakens restraint, and that a wish often finds its own arguments. The verse does not promise that the pull will stop, or that noticing it will be easy. It does not treat hunger, illness or a real need as enemies, and anyone whose cravings are hurting their health or their life should speak to a doctor.
