Bhagiratha Brings Down the Ganga

Yoga Vasishtha 6.1.74

The story · English

Rama once asked Vasishtha to tell him how Prince Bhagiratha brought the heavenly Ganga down to the earth. Vasishtha began by describing the man. Bhagiratha was the jewel of his age, and the whole world seemed to wear him like a mark on its forehead. Those who came asking for something got it before they could ask. He gave generously to good people, and he gathered even his revenue carefully, straw by straw, so that he earned what he gave. He chased poverty out of people's houses the way the rising sun chases the dark. Among enemies he burned like the noon sun, and among the wise he was soft and cool in speech. Vasishtha added that this was the man who would one day pull the Ganga down from heaven.

Even so young, Bhagiratha felt old. He thought about the troubles of human life until the world lost its taste for him. One quiet hour he spoke to himself. Day and night kept coming in their endless round, and he kept giving and taking, enjoying the same enjoyments, and all of it had grown tedious. He wanted to seek only the thing that, once gained, leaves nothing else to want. Was it not shameful, he asked himself, for a thinking being to walk the same circuit every day? Was it not laughable, doing and undoing the same thing like a boy at play? Troubled, he went quietly to the hermitage of his teacher, Tritala.

He told Tritala that his life felt hollow inside and like a wilderness outside. How, he asked, could he cross this misery, and be free of fear of death and disease and of the chains of error and desire? Tritala answered that it comes through an even mind, a steady joy of the soul, knowledge of the one thing worth knowing, and being whole in oneself. That knowable thing is pure intelligence, present everywhere, with no rising and no setting, and it is the same as the soul of the world. Bhagiratha objected. If he was that pure soul, why was he so full of mistakes, and why did it not show in him? Tritala said knowledge alone reveals it, and the soul that finds itself to be the all-pervading spirit is freed from rebirth.

Tritala went on. Letting go of attachment to wife, children and household, and staying level in gain and loss, widens the soul. So does quiet and time spent in communion with God. Love and hatred must fade, for they are the sickness of worldliness. Bhagiratha pressed him once more. Ego was rooted in him as deeply as tall trees on a mountaintop, so how could it be removed? Tritala said it fades by itself when desires are dropped, through great effort at self-command and a heart widened to all beings. We stay under ego's rule, he said, while we fear the shame of poverty and the scorn of others. Give up everything, even while holding it, and live as a beggar among enemies without pride, and you are greater than the greatest.

Bhagiratha took the words to heart, thought for a few days, and then began an agnishtoma sacrifice to give up everything. He gave away his cattle and lands, his horses, his jewels and countless coins, to the twice-born and to his relatives, without asking who deserved what. In three days he had nothing left but his own life, flesh and bones. When the treasury was empty he handed his kingdom over like a straw to the neighbouring enemies, to the great grief of his people. As they overran his lands and took the palace, he tied on a plain undergarment and walked out past the borders. He went through far villages and deserts until he reached a place where nobody knew his face or name.

There he lived hidden and grew calm, dull to feelings from within and without, and rested in the stillness of his soul. Then he roamed through many countries and distant islands, until, without meaning to, he came back to his own city, now held by his enemies. He went from door to door, and the citizens and ministers saw their former king begging for alms. They knew him and honored him, and they were sorry to see him so low. The reigning prince came out and begged him to take back his kingdom. Bhagiratha treated the offer like a bit of straw and accepted only a small meal. After a few days he moved on, and the people cried, "Ah, what has become of unfortunate Bhagiratha?"

He walked on with a calm mind and a peaceful face, enjoying the wandering, until he met his teacher Tritala on the road. They greeted each other and went on together over hills and deserts on their holy journeys. Once, sitting together in quiet, they talked about human life. What do we gain by carrying this frail body, and what do we lose by losing it? They decided that neither gain nor loss is real, and that the body should simply be borne, in the duties that come down to us. So they passed from forest to forest, feeling no joy beyond their inner bliss and no sorrow. They scorned riches, horses, cattle and even the eight supernatural powers as rotten straw, and took whatever came as the fruit of earlier deeds.

One day Bhagiratha was passing through a large city when he saw its ruler, who had no child, carried off by death like a fish seized by a shark. The people feared lawlessness without a king and went looking for a worthy man. They found the quiet, patient prince begging for alms, and when they knew he was Bhagiratha, they took him with their soldiers to be crowned. He mounted an elephant, and the troops gathered round him thick as raindrops falling into a lake. The people shouted, "Here is Bhagiratha our lord, may he be victorious for ever," and the sound reached the far mountains and filled their caves. Then the people of his old kingdom came as well. The ruler he had set over them, they said, had been devoured by death, and they asked him to rule them again, since an offer that comes unasked should not be refused.

Bhagiratha accepted, and became the sole ruler of the earth to its seven seas. He ruled without fear or restlessness, calm in mind, gentle in speech, and free of envy and selfishness. Then he thought of his ancestors, the sons of Sagara, who had dug out the sea coast and were burned alive beneath the ground by the sage Kapila's curse. He had heard that the waters of the Ganga purify every body and soul, and he wanted those waters to wash their bones. The heavenly Ganga had never yet run over the land. He left the kingdom with his ministers and went into a lonely forest to practice austere devotion. For many years, through many rains, he worshipped Brahma, Siva and the sage Jahnu in turn.

At last it worked. The bright wave of the Ganga poured out of Brahma's water pot and rushed onto the moon-crested head of Siva. From there it fell to the earth and took three courses, like the good deeds of great people, praised in all three worlds. So the river came to flow over the land, carrying Bhagiratha's glory to distant countries. First it washed his ancestors' remains with its holy water, and from that day the stream has also been called Bhagirathi, after him. Vasishtha ended by telling Rama to look at her: hurrying along with rising waves, smiling with foam, sprinkling purity with the drops of her spray, and scattering plenty over the land as a reward to the deserving.
