Cosmic Identity of Breath
Prashna Upanishad 2.9
Meaning · English
Through your brilliance you are the king of gods; as a guardian you are the fierce one. You roam the skies as the sun, the master of all lights.
The breath is not just a bodily function but is identified with the forces of the universe. It is compared to the king of gods because of its power and to the fierce protector for its strength. By linking the breath to the sun and the sky, the text suggests that the energy animating a person is the same energy that lights the world and governs the atmosphere.
Consider a single power grid that runs a small lamp and a whole city's streetlights. The electricity is the same current in both. Similarly, the energy in your lungs is the same force that powers the sun in the sky.
