The bathing and the morning prayers were over. Rama turned away from the grassy riverbank and walked back to his little home beneath the trees, with Sita on one side of him and Lakshmana on the other. Once the morning rites were done, the three of them settled into the shade of the hut. The hermits of the forest came and paid him their respects. Then Rama sat at ease with green branches spread over his head like a canopy and Sita close beside him. He looked the way the moon looks beside the star Chitra, the one he loves best. With Lakshmana there too, he began telling old stories from long ago, his whole heart in each one. It was a pleasant, quiet hour, and that was when someone came wandering toward the hut.
She was a giantess, and her name was Shurpanakha. She was the sister of Ravana, the ten-necked king, born of the same mother. She had come there on a whim, and she saw Rama. He shone like one of the gods. His eyes were wide like lotus leaves, his arms were long, he moved like a great elephant, and his hair was coiled in a hermit's knot. He looked young and strong, and every mark on him said king. She fell in love with him on the spot. They could not have been more unlike. Her eyes were cruel and her hair hung tangled. Her voice frightened people, and her heart was set on wrong. His voice was gentle and his words were always for what was right. Burning with desire, she spoke to him.
"You wear your hair matted like a hermit," she said, "yet you carry a bow and arrows, and you have your wife with you. Why have you come in hermit's clothes into a forest full of giants? What are you doing here? Tell me why you came and what you want." Rama, whom his enemies feared, was not afraid of her. He answered honestly and told her everything. "Dasharatha was king before me, as brave as the gods. I am his eldest son and heir, and my name is Rama. This is my younger brother, Lakshmana, who has sworn to stand by me. This princess is my wife, Sita of Videha. My father commanded it and my mother urged it, so I came to live in this forest, to keep the law and earn merit."
"Now tell me about yourself," Rama went on. "Your name, your family, your father. You are of the giant race, I think, and can change your shape whenever you like. Tell me truly why you have come here." She answered, driven by her desire. "I am a giantess, and I can take any shape I please. My name is Shurpanakha, and wherever I walk, people panic. King Ravana is my brother. You may have heard of him. So is mighty Kumbhakarna, who sleeps an endless sleep, and Vibhishana, who is dutiful and nothing like the rest of us. Khara and Dushana are my brothers too, and everyone knows how brave they are. But I am stronger than all of them. And when I look at you, I see the husband I have chosen."
"I am powerful, and I can fly wherever I wish," she said. "Leave that poor, misshapen Sita and take me as your wife. I am far more worthy. Look how beautiful I am. I'll eat that ugly woman over there, and your brother along with her. Then come with me, my love. We will roam this whole forest together, every grove and every mountain peak." Her eyes glittered with passion as she spoke. Rama, who knew how to choose his words, looked at her and gave her a gentle smile. "I already have a wife," he said. "Here she is, my Sita, faithful and dear to me. A woman like you would never put up with a rival. But my brother Lakshmana has no wife. He is brave and handsome, and he longs to marry. Take him."
Shurpanakha left Rama's side and turned to Lakshmana. "Take me as your bride," she said. "My beauty is a match for yours. We will wander the groves of Dandaka together, happy." Lakshmana had a smooth tongue, and he set out to turn her away. "Would a lady as grand as you agree to be the slave-wife of a slave?" he said. "I serve my brother in everything. Be his second wife instead. He will tire of his old, grey, ugly wife and leave her for a young beauty like you. Who could be so blind as to love another woman over you?" He meant every word as mockery, but she took it all as the truth. Burning with love again, she rushed back to Rama, where Sita sat beside him.
"Rama, how can you cling to this old, wrinkled, ugly thing and look at me with scorn?" she cried. "I will eat her right now, in front of you, and then you and I will roam Dandaka with no rivals." Eyes blazing, she rushed at Sita. Rama stopped her, then turned to his brother. "We should never joke with savage, angry creatures, Lakshmana. Sita was nearly killed. Do not let this one go without a mark on her." Lakshmana's anger rose. He drew his sword and cut off her nose and ears. Shrieking, bleeding, groaning like thunder before rain, she fled through the forest to Janasthana. There she found Khara among thousands of giant chieftains, and fell at his feet. When she could speak, she told him everything, and showed him her bleeding face.
