Khara's sister had taunted him, and his anger rose. With his giants gathered round, he told her he could not bear such scorn; it stung like salt in an open wound. "I think very little of this Rama," he said. "He is a weak man, and his days are short. Dry your tears, sister. Before the sun sets my axe will lay him on the ground, and his brother with him, and you will drink his warm blood." Her heart leapt, and she praised him as the pride of all the giants. Calmer now, Khara turned to Dushana, who commanded his armies. "Call out fourteen thousand of our best, the ones who never turn their backs in a fight. Ready my chariot, my bows, my swords and lances. I will lead them out myself and kill Rama."
Before he had finished speaking, the chariot stood ready, drawn by dappled horses and blazing with gold, its wheels golden and its pole of lapis. Bells swung from it, and Khara's banner hung over a row of swords. "Ride out," Dushana cried, and the host poured from Janasthana with maces, spears, axes, clubs, bows and pikes. Khara drove close behind. "Faster," he roared, his voice like a cloud breaking into hail. But as they went, a dark cloud thundered and rained blood. Khara's strong horses stumbled and fell on a road strewn with fresh flowers. The sky went black, edged with red like whirling torches. A huge vulture landed on the gold staff of his banner. Every beast and bird of prey in the thickets rose crying and followed the host.
The sky turned red before evening was due. Jackals and cranes screamed at the king. The sun was eclipsed, a comet shaped like a mace burned beside it, and stars came out by day. Lilies drooped, streams dried and their fish died, trees stood stripped bare, and the earth shook to its roots. Khara's left arm throbbed. He knew that sign, and his face fell, and tears came to his eyes. Yet in his rage he did not turn back. He laughed. "I scorn these little omens," he told his giants. "With my arrows I could bring down the stars. I have never been beaten. I will not go home until Rama and Lakshmana are dead." His giants cheered, already caught in the noose of Fate. High above, gods, Gandharvas and saints gathered to watch, praying that Raghu's sons would win.
At the little hermitage, Rama saw the same signs. "Look, brother," he said to Lakshmana. "The clouds are raining blood. My arrows are smoking and my bow is restless for my hand. Danger is near. But take heart. My arm is throbbing, which means victory, and your face is bright and clear. Listen, they are coming, with shouting and drums. Take your bow and go with the Maithil lady to the cave where the trees are thickest. Not a word of argument; I ask it by your love for me. I know you could fight them too, but today I will fight alone." Lakshmana said nothing, and went with Sita to the mountain. Rama put on his armour, which shone on him like fire, and strung his bow. In the sky the watchers whispered, "Fourteen thousand of them, and he is one man. How can he fight alone?"
Khara saw Rama waiting and drove straight at him, his lords around him like lesser stars around Mars. With a yell he loosed a thousand darts, and his giants rained arrows, swords, clubs and spears on Rama from every side, charging by chariot, horse and elephant. Rama took it all as the ocean takes in rivers, breaking stroke after stroke with his own arrows. He was wounded in breast and side until he ran red, like the sun among evening clouds, and the watchers in the sky grew faint. Then he drew his bow to its full bent. Arrows flew from it in hundreds, then thousands, easily, as if in play, each one passing clean through a giant and flying on, burning. Bows, shields, arms, horses, drivers, elephants and riders fell. The survivors ran to Khara.
Dushana rallied them, and they came back hurling rocks and whole trees. Hemmed in on every side, Rama gave a terrible shout and loosed his Gandharva arrow; a thousand shafts darkened the sun, and the plain filled with the dead. Dushana sent five thousand of his bravest. Rama stood under their hail like a bull with its eyes shut against a storm, then answered. He split Dushana's bow, killed his horses, struck off his driver's head and put three arrows in his chest. Dushana leapt down with a huge spiked mace and charged. Two arrows took off both his arms, and he fell like an elephant robbed of its tusks. "Well fought, son of Kakutstha," the spirits cried. Then three chiefs rushed in, Mahakapala with a pike, Sthulaksha with a spear, Pramathi with an axe. Rama met them calmly, as if greeting guests.
One arrow took Mahakapala's head. Arrows filled Sthulaksha's eyes. Pramathi fell like a tall tree, and five thousand more arrows finished the rest of Dushana's men. Khara, in a fury, sent the last of his army with his twelve chiefs, Syenagami among them. Rama's gold-feathered arrows cut them down by the hundred and the thousand, until the forest floor was thick with blood. So the fourteen thousand fell to one man, on foot, alone. Only Khara and the three-headed Trishiras were left. Trishiras stopped Khara's chariot. "Let me go," he said. "I swear on my sword: I kill Rama, or he kills me." Khara let him. Trishiras put three arrows in Rama's forehead. "Your arrows feel like flowers," said Rama. "Now feel mine." He killed the horses and driver, struck the giant to the heart, and with three arrows rolled his three heads in the dust.
The last giants fled to Khara like frightened deer. When he saw Dushana and Trishiras dead, fear came over him for the first time, but he charged anyway. The two of them filled the sky with arrows until the sun went pale. Khara rode here and there, showing all his skill. One of his arrows split Rama's bow right where his hand held it. Seven more pierced his armour, and a thousand more tore it from him until it lay glittering on the ground, and Rama bled from shoulder, breast and side. Then Rama took up a great bow, Vishnu's own, which Agastya had given him. He shot down Khara's banner. He killed the four horses, broke the yoke, the poles and the axle, took the driver's head, and smiling, cut through the hand that held Khara's bow. Khara jumped down, mace in hand.
Rama spoke to him. "You and your host have done what everyone must condemn. You have killed the pure hermits of Dandaka wood, and you will reap what you sowed. Sinners always do, as surely as trees bear fruit in season. I am a king, sent to strike down the wicked. Today my arrows will drop your head like a ripe palm fruit." Khara's eyes burned red, and he smiled. "You killed my lesser giants, and now you boast? The truly brave do not brag about their families in battle. I stand here with my mace like Death with his noose. Before the sun goes down, the fourteen thousand you killed will have their tears wiped away." He hurled the gold-ringed mace. It flew blazing, scorching the trees below it, but Rama's arrows cut it apart, and it lay on the ground like a snake stilled by herbs.
"That was the last of your strength," Rama said. "Today you die, and Dandaka will be safe again for the hermits." Khara tore up a Sal tree and threw it, shouting, "You are dead." Rama's arrows stopped it, and a thousand more tore open Khara's chest. Bleeding, Khara charged. Rama stepped back a pace and fitted the arrow called Brahma's staff, Indra's gift, and it struck Khara in the breast. He fell, burning. In less than three hours all fourteen thousand were dead, with Dushana, Trishiras and Khara. The gods beat their drums and rained flowers on Rama, and the saints, led by Agastya, thanked him for winning their peace. Lakshmana came down from the cave with Sita. When she saw her husband alive among his fallen enemies, she threw her arms around him, and then again, and all her fear was gone.
