Whatever things are said to be born are not born in truth. Their birth is like a magic show, and the magic itself is not found anywhere. A sprout grows from a seed made by magic, and the sprout is made of the same magic. It is not lasting, and it is not cut off. The same holds for all things.
Three words carry this. Dharma means a thing, a happening, anything the mind holds as a separate item; the root sense is what is held. Tattvatah means in truth, in the thatness of it, as opposed to how it appears. Maya means magic, a showing that looks like something and is not what it looks like. Gaudapada says that whatever is called born is not born in truth. Birth is a magician's show. Then he goes one step further: the magic is not found either. There is no real conjuring behind the appearance that could be pointed to. His example is a seed made by magic. A sprout comes from it, and the sprout is made of the same stuff, so it is no more real than the seed. Such a sprout is not lasting, because nothing real was ever there to last. It is not cut off, because nothing real was ever there to be cut. This answers the old quarrel over cause and effect: does the effect last, or does it end? Gaudapada replies that both questions assume a real birth. Shankara reads it as showing that eternity and destruction both fail for what is only appearance. Nagarjuna and Vasubandhu also spoke of things as like magic, though each built a different path from there. The listener is asked to stop treating the chain of cause and effect as solid ground.
A stage magician covers a pot with a cloth, lifts it, and a green shoot stands there. The audience argues about whether the shoot will wilt or keep growing. Both sides miss that the seed was a trick. The shoot is the same trick, so lasting and ending are both questions about nothing.
1. Tonight, pick one small event from your day that you keep explaining: a sharp word, a missed bus, a dish that failed. 2. Sit for five minutes with it and ask where it truly began. Notice how every answer points back to another cause, and none lands on a firm start. 3. Say quietly: it appeared, and I need not decide if it lasts or ends. 4. Notice whether your grip on the memory loosens even a little.
A father sits up at two in the morning after his daughter's fever has finally broken. His mind runs backward: the cold park, the shared cup, the day he let her skip a meal. He wants one cause he can blame. The text teaches that every chain of cause and effect is a magician's show, so the search for a first link has nothing solid to hold. He might let the hunt rest. He notices he is tired and frightened, and that blame is what fear does with an empty night. He puts the question down and watches her breathe. Ordinary experience agrees that a tired mind accuses itself more harshly than a rested one. This does not tell him what caused the fever, and it is no substitute for a doctor. If the fever returns or she seems worse, he calls one. It does not remove his worry or make his love for her less real. It only offers rest from one particular chase.
