Meaning · English

That which has no name, finer than the finest, the highest. Beyond mind, beyond intellect, beyond the senses. Spotless, the lord of the world. Where such a natural state is, how could there be an "I"? How could there be a "you" there? How could there be the moving and the unmoving? What is said to be like space is indeed like space: awareness, free of fault, all-knowing, and full.

Three words carry this. Sahaja is the natural state: sa, together, and ja, born, so what is born along with you and never added later. Caitanya is awareness, from cit, to perceive. Purna is full, with nothing missing and nothing to be added. The avadhuta Dattatatreya describes the self first by what it is not. It has no name. It is finer than the finest thing the mind can picture. Mind, intellect and senses cannot reach it, because they are its instruments and cannot turn round and grasp their source. It carries no stain, and it stands as lord of the world. Then comes the question that drives the verse. In this natural state, how can an "I" stand? How can a "you"? How can the moving and unmoving things of the world? He is asking where the dividing lines would go. "I" and "you" need an edge between them, and he finds no edge in what is full. Last he says the likeness to space is only a likeness. Space is empty and aware of nothing. This is awareness itself, free of fault, knowing all, whole. He teaches this to loosen the grip of the small "I" that thinks it stands apart. The listener is asked to see that the sense of a separate self is a thing the mind builds, and the verse points beyond what the mind builds.

Think of a lamp lit in a room. Everything you see, the table, the chair, your own hands, is seen by its light, yet the light has no outline of its own. You cannot point to where it stops and the room begins. Awareness is like that lamp: it shows every shape and is not itself one of them.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes somewhere quiet with your eyes open. 2. Name one thing you notice: a sound, a colour, the chair under you. 3. Ask, "What is aware of this?" Do not answer in words. Stay with the question for a minute. 4. Notice whether the awareness has an edge, a shape, or a size. Then go on with your evening.

A man stands at the back of a crowded wedding hall, newly retired, wondering who he is now that no one calls him by his title. The verse speaks to him. Step by step: the title was a name given from outside; he can notice that the name has dropped and he is still here, looking at the hall. The text says what looks is without name, finer than the finest, and beyond what mind and senses grasp. So he need not hunt for a new label to stand on. He can talk to guests as one person to another, without defending a role. Ordinary experience confirms that people feel lost when a role ends, and that the feeling eases when they find something steadier than the role. The verse does not promise the loss of status will sting less on the first day, nor does it replace the conversations, planning or counselling that a big change in life may call for.
