Meaning · English

Your forehead shines, clear with the light of loveliness. I take it for a second half-moon, set against the sliver on your crown. Laid together, one turned opposite the other and stitched with a seam of nectar, the two become the full moon.

The poet starts with her forehead, which he calls lavanya-dyuti-vimala: clear with the glow of loveliness. Lavanya is the saltlike sweetness of beauty, the charm that lies beyond mere shape. Then he makes a picture. Her crown carries a sliver of moon, and he takes the forehead for a second half-moon. The forehead is a curve, so it looks like half a moon. Viparyasa means turning one thing the opposite way round. The poet sets the crown's moon and her brow against each other, one facing up and one facing down, and the two fit into a circle. Sudha is nectar, the drink of the moon, and he says it is the seam, the paste that stitches the halves together. The result is the full moon, rakahimakara, the moon of the fifteenth night. The text teaches that her brow is not merely like a moon. It completes the moon that her crown only begins. The poet speaks as a man who looks up and says what he thinks he sees: manye, I take it so. That is how praise works in this hymn. He is not stating a fact. He is showing how much a single forehead can hold. The commentators read the joined moon as a sign of her fullness, with nothing lacking in her.

A clay plate cracks cleanly in two. Someone fits the halves edge to edge, one turned to meet the other, and runs a line of paste along the break. The plate is round and whole again. The crown's sliver and her brow are the two halves, and the nectar is the paste.
