Meaning · English
Your brows, Uma, are bent a little, and they end the fear of the worlds. I take them for the bow of Rati's lord, the love-god. Your eyes, dark as bees, are its string. His hand holds it hidden, wrist and fist concealed.
The poet looks at the Goddess's brows and sees a bow. Two words carry the picture. Bhugna means bent or curved, and the brows are bent only a little, kimcit. Guna means bowstring, and also a quality or thread. The string here is her eyes, dark like bees, madhukara, the honey-maker. Ratipati, lord of Rati, is Kama, the god of desire, whose bow the poets always picture. Kama holds it in his hand, but the hand is hidden. Wrist and fist are covered, so only the bow shows. That is why the poet says manye, I take it to be: he is guessing at what he cannot see. The verse also says the brows are bhuvana-bhaya-bhanga-vyasanini, devoted to breaking the fear of the worlds. Her slight frown is not menace. It is the movement that ends fear. Lakshmidhara's commentary, by tradition, reads her brows as the very bow of love, and the poet does not call that bow cruel. He tells us why the bow is shown in this hymn: her beauty works on those who look as Kama's bow works, and in her case it takes fear away. Nothing is asked of the listener except to look as the poet looks, and to see that her gaze, drawn like a string, is the gentlest of weapons.
Think of a drawn bow seen from the side, the archer's hand tucked behind a cloth so only the curve and the taut string show. The brow is the curve, the dark eye is the string, and the hidden hand is Kama, whose power is felt before anyone sees him.
