Meaning · English
Wide and auspicious, bright with blue lilies and unconquered, a bearer of streams of mercy, sweet and richly spread, protecting: your glance outshines the vast sprawl of many cities, and surely deserves each of their names.
The poet takes the names of famous cities and finds each one describing her glance. Vishala means wide, and it is also an old name for Ujjain. Kalyani means auspicious, a city name too. Ayodhya means unconquerable, and her glance is shown bright with blue lilies, the colour of her eyes. Dhara means stream, and her glance carries streams of compassion. Madhura means sweet and bhogavati means richly spread, so the glance is sweet and generous in its reach. Avanti means protecting. Every city name works twice, as a place and as a quality. That is the wordplay the poem enjoys. The last clause gives the conclusion. Her glance outdoes the whole spread of cities, and so it has the right to carry all their names at once. The cities are only places where such qualities are found in part. Her glance holds them all, whole. The hymn teaches this to say what her looking is like. It is wide enough to reach everyone, unconquerable, auspicious, sweet and protective. In this hymn her mercy is not one trait among others. It flows through everything her eyes do. The commentators also read the verse as a playful gathering of place names, which is how it is read here.
A child calls his mother many names in one day: shelter, sweetness, rock, light. Each is true and none is enough. Her glance is the same. Cities each hold one quality, and the poet says it holds every one.
