Your ears delight only in the honey of the poets' clustered verses, and your sidelong glances, like two young bees, will not leave them. Seeing this, restless to taste the fresh rasas herself, your forehead eye turns a little red with envy.

The poet paints a small scene on the Goddess's face. Her two ears take in poetry, which the verse calls honey gathered from bouquets of verse. Her sidelong glances, kataksha, are like young bees hovering at those ears and refusing to leave. The word rasa carries the meaning. It is juice, taste, and the mood a poem leaves in the listener, from a root meaning to taste. The poet says there are nine such moods. The third eye on her forehead is left out of this feast. It sees the ears and the bees, longs for the same taste, and grows slightly red with asuya, jealousy, the grudge at another's good fortune. The redness is gentle: kincit, a little. The scene says three things about her. She listens to poets with her whole face. Her attention is so full that even her eyes want a share. And poetry is worth being jealous of. The poet is also praising his own craft here, and doing it sideways. He does not say his verses please her. He shows her face already turned to them. The text asks nothing of the reader. It offers a picture of the Mother as the one who hears.

A child at a table sees a sibling lick honey off a spoon, then reaches over with a flushed face and an open hand. The Goddess's third eye is that child, the ears and glances are the one already tasting, and the honey is poetry.
