Unmaking and Remaking

Aditya Hridayam 22

Meaning · English

This lord destroys what has come into being, and he brings it forth again. With his rays he dries, he heats, and he sends the rain.

The same sun that destroys what has come into being also brings it back. What it ends, it starts again. Then come three plain actions. It dries things, drinking up water from ponds and fields. It heats. It rains. All three happen through its rays. For Rama, worn out and facing Ravana, the hymn names one power behind both the ending and the beginning.

A farmer burns the dry stubble off his field after harvest. A few weeks later the same hands press seed into that blackened ground. No one watching thinks there are two farmers. The sun's ending and beginning of things work the same way: one worker, one field, two halves of a single job.
