Awake While All Sleep

Aditya Hridayam 23

Meaning · English

He keeps watch in those who sleep, rooted within every being. He is the fire offering itself, and the fruit that comes to those who offer it.

The first claim is about sleep. When every creature has shut its eyes, something in it does not switch off, and the hymn says that something is the sun, settled inside each living being rather than only shining on it from the sky. The second claim is about worship. The fire offering, the rite of pouring into a flame at dawn and dusk, is the sun as well. So is the good that rite brings back to the person who keeps it. The act and its reward share one source.

Picture a hospital ward at three in the morning. Every patient is asleep, but one nurse moves quietly between the beds, checking each one. Nobody sees her, yet the ward is never left untended. The sun is placed in that role: the one who stays awake within every sleeping creature, on watch while it rests.
