Seasons, Scripture, Every Task

Aditya Hridayam 24

Meaning · English

The Vedas, and the seasons too, and the fruit the seasons bring; every work that is done in the worlds: all of it is this Sun, the lord.

The list moves from the sacred scriptures to the turning seasons, then to what those seasons ripen, then to every task people take up in the world. Then it gathers the whole list into one and names it: the Sun, the master of it all. Knowledge, time, harvest and work are not four separate realms. The seasons turn because of him, the grain ripens in his heat, and work is done in his light. For a tired Rama, scripture, field and battlefield all sit under one lord.

In a house, the fan turns, the bulb glows, the fridge hums and the radio plays. Four machines, four jobs, and they look nothing alike. Trip the main switch and all four stop together, because one supply ran them all. The hymn sees scripture, seasons, harvest and work the same way: different on the surface, fed by the one Sun.
