Not Sinking in Hardship
Aditya Hridayam 25
Meaning · English
Raghava, whoever sings his praise in sudden disaster, in long hardship, in the trackless wild, and in fear does not sink down.
Agastya names four kinds of trouble. First, sudden disaster. Second, slow, grinding hardship. Third, the wild forest where no path is clear. Fourth, plain fear. In any of them, a person who keeps speaking the Sun's praise does not sink. The word means losing heart, giving way, slumping inward. The promise is not that trouble vanishes. It assumes the trouble has already come. What it says is that the one who praises stays upright inside it. And it is open to anyone, any person at all.
A walker crossing a fast stream at night keeps one hand on a rope strung from bank to bank. The water still pulls at the knees, and the dark is still dark. But the hand on the rope keeps the feet under the body. Praising the Sun is that rope: trouble stays, and the person stays standing.
