Three Recitations Before Battle

Aditya Hridayam 26

Meaning · English

Worship him with a single mind, the god of gods, the lord of the world. Having recited this three times, you will be victorious in battles.

Agastya gives Rama two plain instructions and one promise. First, worship the sun with attention gathered to one point, not split between the hymn and the enemy waiting across the field. The sun is named god of the gods and lord of the world, the same ruler the earlier lines have been describing. Second, recite the hymn three times over. Then comes the promise: Rama will win in his battles. That win is spoken to Rama, on that day, facing Ravana.

A magnifying glass held over paper on a sunny day. Spread out, the light only warms the page. Bring the glass to the right height and all of it gathers into one bright dot that smokes and scorches. Single-minded worship is that narrowing: the same attention Rama already has, drawn to one point instead of scattered.
