The Sage Takes Leave
Aditya Hridayam 27
Meaning · English
In this very moment, mighty-armed one, you will slay Ravana. Having said this, Agastya then went away, back the way he had come.
Agastya ends his teaching with a time and a name. The time is now: not after rest, not someday, but at this moment. The name is Ravana, the one standing across the field. He calls Rama mighty-armed, naming a strength Rama already has. Then the sage simply leaves, the way he arrived. He does not stay to watch or to be thanked. The hymn has been given, and what comes next belongs to Rama.
A driving instructor in the passenger seat gives one last pointer, then gets out and shuts the door. The learner sits alone at the wheel, engine running. Agastya's leaving works the same way. The lesson is finished, and his going is itself a statement that Rama is ready to carry it alone.
