Sorrow Gone, Words Kept

Aditya Hridayam 28

Meaning · English

Hearing this, the radiant one let go of his grief. Glad at heart and self-possessed, Raghu's son took the hymn in and held it fast.

Rama hears Agastya out, and his grief is gone. Not dulled, but gone. Three words then describe the man who is left. He is called greatly radiant. He is well pleased, glad in a settled way. He is composed, his attention gathered back into himself. In that state he holds the hymn. He takes it in and keeps it, the way a person keeps something learned by heart. Nothing has been recited yet. Hearing it has done this much.

A porter reaches the end of a long climb and sets down a heavy load. He straightens his back. Then someone hands him a folded note with directions for the next stretch, and he buttons it into his shirt pocket, close to his chest. The load is the grief Rama puts down. The note is the hymn, kept on him for what comes next.
