Sipped Water, Lifted Bow

Aditya Hridayam 29

Meaning · English

Looking at the Sun and reciting the hymn, he found the highest joy. Sipping water three times and made clean, the mighty one took up his bow.

Rama does four things, in order. He looks at the Sun. He recites the hymn Agastya gave him, and a deep gladness comes over him. He sips water three times, the small rite of cleansing done before any serious act, and so is made clean. Then, strong and ready, he picks up his bow. The joy comes from the praying, not from winning, because the fight has not resumed yet. Prayer comes first, then the body is readied, and only then does the hand reach for the weapon.

A cook comes into the kitchen, rinses her hands at the tap, shakes off the water, and only then reaches for the knife. The washing takes seconds, but it marks the moment when ordinary time ends and the work begins. Rama's three sips of water do the same: they close the prayer and open the fight.
