Glad Heart, Fixed Purpose

Aditya Hridayam 30

Meaning · English

Seeing Ravana, Rama, his heart glad, came forward to fight. With great and complete effort, he stood resolved to bring about Ravana's end.

Rama looks at Ravana, and what rises in him is gladness. A little earlier he was worn out and troubled; now the sight of his enemy does not shake him. He moves toward the fight instead of waiting for it. Then two things: he gives it all his effort, and that effort is large, nothing kept in reserve. And his mind settles on a single aim, Ravana's end. The gladness does not soften the purpose. It sits right beside it.

A runner who has shaken out the nerves crouches at the line, eyes on the finish, weight already tipping forward. There is no fear in the body now, only readiness, and every muscle is going one way. That is Rama facing Ravana: the dread spent, the whole self leaning toward one end.
