One Mind Seeming Two
Gaudapada Karika 4.61
Meaning · English
As in a dream the mind moves, taking on the look of two, through maya, so in waking the mind moves, taking on the look of two, through maya. The mind that is not two shows itself as two in dream, and there is no doubt of it. The mind that is not two shows itself as two in waking, and there is no doubt of it.
Three words carry the verse. Citta is mind, from the root cit, to perceive: the one that knows and pictures. Maya is from ma, to measure out: the power that lays out forms which are not what they seem. Dvayabhasa joins dvaya, twofold, with abhasa, a shining-toward, an appearance. Advaya is simply not-two. Gaudapada says that in dream the mind moves and looks like two: a seer here, a seen thing there. Waking works the same way. In both, the mind is not-two, and the two is only how its movement appears. He repeats it with no doubt, because he wants the equal footing of dream and waking to be taken seriously. He is not calling the waking world a hoax. He says what it is made of is the same stuff as a dream, which is mind appearing as subject and object. This sits in the book of the whirling firebrand, where a moving torch seems to be a circle. Here the mover is the mind. Shankara reads the not-two as the one reality and the two as its seeming. Vasubandhu's mind-only teaching has a close echo in saying that mind appears as knower and known. Gaudapada's aim differs, since he points to the unborn. The verse asks the listener to look at the mover, not the pictures.
A single lamp stands beside a pond. Wind moves the water, and now there are a dozen broken lamps trembling on it. Nobody lit twelve. The lamp is one and the surface moves. The mind is the lamp and the water together, and the movement is what shows up as two.
1. Tonight, when you wake from a dream or lie in the dark, recall one figure from it and note that your own mind supplied the face, the voice and the fear. 2. Tomorrow, when an argument replays in your head, stop for one minute and notice that the other person you are answering is a picture in you. 3. Say quietly, once: the same mind made both.
A woman wakes at four in the morning, heart pounding, after a dream in which her late brother was shouting at her. For a few seconds the room is only a backdrop, and the anger feels real. Then she sees the ceiling, hears the fan, and knows the shouting happened nowhere but in her own head. Gaudapada's verse asks her to carry that small recognition one step further. On the bus that afternoon she replays a quarrel with a colleague, and her jaw tightens at a face and a voice she is composing herself. The verse points to the same maker behind both scenes, a mind that shows itself as seer and seen. Seeing this does not erase the colleague, who is a real person, nor does it quiet her grief for her brother. Ordinary experience confirms only that a dream feels fully real while it lasts and that the body reacts to it. What the text claims beyond that, that waking is the same kind of appearance and that the mind is not two, is its own teaching. The verse does not promise that sorrow will lift, and it does not take the place of a doctor if sleep stays broken for weeks.
