One who keeps constant practice, and then becomes without any support, melts into That. Within, he is free of both merit and fault. The world is a fierce poison that brings the swoon of delusion. For its undoing there is one remedy only, sure and never failing: the natural nectar. To inner feeling it is formless. To the eye it takes form and comes into sight. Free of being and not-being, it is called the middle space.
Three words carry the verse. Niralamba means without support: alamba is whatever a person leans on, a prop or a handhold. Sahaja means born together with, so natural, not made. Amrita is the nectar that does not die. The avadhuta also speaks of laya, a melting, the way salt goes into water. The first couplet says that steady practice comes first. Then the practitioner leans on nothing, and he melts into That. Inside him no mark of good or fault remains to hold onto. The second couplet names the trouble. The world, taken as solid and separate, works like a fierce poison. It does not kill. It makes a person faint into bewilderment. The avadhuta offers one remedy that never misses, and it is not manufactured. It is born with the self, so it is only uncovered. The third couplet says where this nectar stands. To inner feeling it has no shape. To the eye it appears with shape. Yet it is neither simply there nor simply absent. It sits in the middle space, at neither end of any pair. This is taught because earlier verses gave props, step by step, for those who need them. A listener could be left holding the props forever. The song says what they were for: they carry a person to the edge, and the last step is taken with nothing underneath. What it asks of the listener is steady practice, and then a willingness to put the supports down.
A child learns to swim with one hand on the pool's edge. The hand is needed for weeks. Then one day it lets go, and the water holds. The edge is practice and its props. The water was under the child all along, like the nectar born with the self.
1. Pick one ordinary wait today, such as the kettle boiling or a bus stop. Leave the phone in your pocket. 2. Stay five minutes with nothing in your hands. Notice the moment your hand or mind reaches for something to lean on. 3. Do not follow the reach. Watch it rise and fade. 4. At night, write one line on what was left when the reaching stopped.
A retired schoolteacher wakes on his first morning without the bell. No register, no uniform, no one calling him sir. He fills the kettle twice and checks the clock. His hands look for a task. The verse speaks to that hour. The roles that held his day were real supports, and the song does not call them worthless. It says practice has a last step where one leans on nothing. In that kitchen, he could let the restlessness come without feeding it at once. He could notice that the person drinking tea is still here, with the title gone. Ordinary experience confirms that when familiar structure falls away, unease comes first and often eases with time. The verse does not promise that the quiet will feel good, that loneliness or grief will lift, or that it replaces a doctor. If low mood or sleeplessness lasts for weeks after such a change, a family doctor should hear about it.
