By the grace of the guru's wisdom, whether a man is a fool or a scholar, if he truly wakes to what is real, he turns away from the ocean of becoming. Freed from liking and disliking, glad in the good of all beings, firm in knowing and steady in mind, he reaches the highest state. As the pot breaks and the space inside the pot merges into space, so when the body is gone, the yogi merges into his own nature, the supreme self.

Three words carry the passage. Prajna is wisdom, from jna, to know, with the prefix pra, forward: knowing that has come fully awake. Raga-dvesha is liking and disliking, the pull toward and the push away. Ghatakasha is pot-space, from ghata, pot, and akasha, space: the emptiness held inside a clay pot. The avadhuta Dattatreya begins by saying that learning does not decide who wakes. A fool or a scholar may do so. What matters is the guru's grace, which gives wisdom, and a real waking to what is real. Such a person turns away from the ocean of becoming, the endless round of birth and wanting. He is free of liking and disliking, he delights in the good of all beings, and his knowing is firm and his mind steady. That person reaches the highest state. Then he gives a picture of what happens at the body's end. Inside a pot, space seems to have a boundary. Break the pot and that space was never separate from the space outside. In the same way the yogi, when the body falls away, rests in his own nature, which the text calls the supreme self. Why teach this here? The chapter keeps asking what is left when every support is gone. The answer is that nothing real is lost. The walls were the only thing dividing. The verse asks the listener to see that cleverness is not the price of entry, and that the signs of waking are plain ones: even-mindedness and kindness.

A clay water jar sits in a courtyard. The air inside feels like its own small room until the jar slips and cracks. The air in the jar and the air in the yard turn out to be one air. The jar is the body and the sense of being a separate person, and the air is the self.

1. Pick one person or thing you dislike or crave strongly today, and note it once in the morning. 2. When the pull or push arises, name it silently: liking, or disliking. Do not act for one minute. 3. Before bed, do one small thing for someone's good without telling anyone. 4. Notice whether your mind was a little steadier for it.

A woman stands in a hospital corridor at dusk while her father sleeps after surgery. Her mind keeps sorting people: the nurse who was curt, the brother who did not come, the doctor she trusts. Each judgment tightens her. The verse would change the moment in steps. First she sees that liking and disliking are what she is carrying, more than the facts. Second, she lets the curt nurse be tired rather than an enemy, and thanks the one who helped. Third, she turns her care toward the whole ward, bringing water to the woman beside her. Her mind steadies, because it has stopped fighting people. Ordinary experience confirms that grudges and cravings keep a mind busy and that kindness often quiets it. The verse speaks of waking and of the self at the body's end, as the text's own teaching. It does not promise the surgery will go well, remove her fear or grief, or replace the doctors, whose care her father needs.
