Meaning · English
This is said of those bound to action: the thought they hold at the end becomes their destination. Their going can be told, for speech and the senses can speak of it. Of those joined to yoga it is not said. Their going cannot be told anywhere. Knowing this, see that the yogis' path is not something made up. When the making of alternatives is dropped, perfection arises by itself. At a holy ford or in an outcaste's house, wherever he happens to die, the yogi sees no womb. He is dissolved in the supreme Brahman.
Three words carry it. Karma-yukta means yoked to action, from yuj, to join. These are people whose life rests on deeds and rites. Gati means a going, a destination, from gam, to go. Vikalpa means imagining alternatives, from kalp, to fashion. It is the mind building options, such as this way or that way, this place or that one. Dattatreya first says what is taught for people of action. For them the last thought decides where they go, and that going can be described in words. For the yogi, he says, no such description exists. His going is beyond what speech and the senses can reach, wherever he is. Then comes the turn. The yogis' path is not constructed. It is not a plan the mind assembles. When vikalpa is dropped, the result arises on its own, without being manufactured. So the place of death does not matter. A pilgrim's holy ford or the house of the lowest-ranked outcaste makes no difference. The yogi sees no womb, meaning no further birth, and is dissolved in the supreme Brahman. The reason for saying this is the worry behind many questions: must the end be arranged right, with the right place and the right last thought? Dattatreya answers that for one who has dropped imagining, nothing needs arranging. The text asks the listener to see how much of the spiritual life is the mind building choices.
A man packs for a trip, weighing three routes and two hotels, and never leaves. A friend says he is already home. The packing and the choosing, the building of options, are what kept him standing at the door.
1. Tonight, before sleep, notice one plan your mind is running about how something should go: a conversation, a trip, a decision. 2. Ask whether the plan is a fact or only an option your mind built. Write the plan on paper in one line. 3. Set the paper down and do the next plain task in front of you, for ten minutes, without choosing between alternatives. 4. Notice what stays when the planning stops.
A son sits by his father's hospital bed at night. The family is arguing over whether to move him home or to a hospice. Someone says the last words and the right place matter most. The son has turned every option over so many times that he can no longer think. The verse would change the moment in steps. First, the son sees that most of the weight is in the imagining, the endless building of what might be best. Second, he can ask the doctors the plain questions and make the practical choice, since the text itself says nothing about neglecting care. Third, he can stop treating the place as if it decided his father's worth or fate. The text teaches that for the yogi the place of death is no obstacle. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind going round in circles at night decides worse than a rested one. The verse does not remove grief. It does not make the decision for him, and it is no substitute for the medical team who can say what his father needs.
