Ancient Yog, Told to a Friend
Bhagavad Gita 4.3
Meaning · English
That same ancient science of Yog I have revealed to you today. You are my devotee and my friend, and so I tell you. Certainly this is a supreme secret.
Krishna names three things: yoga, bhakta and sakha, and a fourth, rahasya. Yoga here is the discipline that joins a person to the divine, the path he has been describing. Bhakta comes from a root meaning to share in or be devoted to, so a bhakta is one who gives himself to another. Sakha is friend, someone who sits beside you rather than above you. Rahasya is a secret, from a sense of what is kept apart. Krishna says the teaching Arjuna hears now is the very one he gave at the start of time, not a new version. He gives it today, in the middle of a crisis, and he gives the reason: Arjuna is devoted to him and is his friend. The secret is not hidden by trickery. It stays secret because it cannot be taken in without trust and closeness. Shankara reads the secret as hard to grasp and not for those unready to receive it. Ramanuja stresses devotion as the very qualification for hearing it. Madhva stresses that it opens only to a devotee through the Lord's grace. All three agree that Arjuna is not chosen for his skill. He is chosen for his closeness. The verse asks the listener to come as a friend and a devotee, not as a critic.
A grandmother hands her granddaughter a worn recipe card for a dish that has been cooked in the family for generations. She does not hand it to a stranger at the door. The dish is the same one, unchanged. What changes is who is trusted to carry it. The card is the old Yog, and the granddaughter is Arjuna, given it because of closeness.
1. Tonight, pick one person you trust and tell them one thing you have been holding back, such as a worry or a doubt. Take five minutes. 2. Tomorrow, ask someone older than you to explain one thing they have learned to do well. Listen without correcting or comparing. 3. Afterward, notice how differently you listen to a person you trust and one you do not.
A retired machinist spends his last afternoon at the factory with the young apprentice who will take his bench. He could hand over the manual and leave. Instead he pulls up a stool, shows how he feels for a bad cut by the sound, and says why he does each small thing. The apprentice, who has been quiet for months, begins to ask real questions. The verse speaks to that moment. Krishna does not give Arjuna the teaching as a rule to obey. He gives it as something that has passed down and is now passed to a friend, with the reason stated plainly: you are close to me. Step by step, the apprentice stops guarding his pride, asks what he does not know, and receives more than instructions. Ordinary experience confirms that people take in what comes from someone they trust far better than what comes from a stranger. The limit is plain. Being told a secret by a friend does not make the work easy or the apprentice skilled. The learning still has to be done, and trust opens the door only.
