Arjuna Questions the Timeline
Bhagavad Gita 4.4
Meaning · English
Your birth was recent; Vivasvan's birth was long before. How am I to understand this: that you taught this science in the beginning?
Arjuna is working out dates. The word janma means birth, and he sets two births side by side. Krishna's is apara, later or nearer. Vivasvan's, the sun-god's, is para, earlier or prior. The gap between them looks too wide for one teacher to cross. Then comes proktavan, taught, and the phrase 'in the beginning'. Krishna has just spoken as if he gave this teaching at the start of time, and Arjuna cannot fit that with the friend who stands beside him, born in his own age. This is Arjuna's view in that moment, not the book's teaching. He sees a man his own age, and the claim does not add up. He does not accept it quietly, and he does not dismiss it. He asks how he is meant to understand it. The question is also a way of asking Krishna to say who he is. Shankara reads the doubt as raised so that the account of the Lord's birth can follow. Ramanuja takes it as a real puzzle about how one person can be both recently born and the first teacher. Madhva also treats it as a question that draws out Krishna's answer about his own nature.
A young man at a school reunion says he taught the founding class, fifty years back. The old teachers look at his face, then at the calendar, and ask how that can be. Arjuna stands where they stand: the face before him and the date of the claim do not match.
1. Today, notice one moment when something you are told does not fit what you can see, such as a claim at work or a story at home. 2. Instead of nodding or dismissing it, write the mismatch in one plain sentence, as Arjuna does: 'You say X, but I see Y.' 3. Ask it aloud, kindly, to the person concerned, and then listen to the whole answer before replying.
A boy in a classroom hears his teacher say something that does not fit what he read the night before. His face goes warm, and he keeps his hand down. The verse shows another way. Arjuna names the exact mismatch, the two birth dates, and asks how he is to understand it. He does not accuse Krishna or hide his puzzlement. Step by step, the boy notices the gap, puts it into one clear sentence, and says it to the teacher in a respectful tone. Then he waits for the answer. Ordinary experience bears this out: a question left unasked tends to sit in the mind and harden into quiet doubt, while a plainly stated one can be answered. Arjuna's question is also an act of trust, because he asks the very person whose claim puzzles him. The limit is plain. Asking does not promise an answer that satisfies at once, and it does not settle whether the teacher is right. It only keeps the doubt honest and open.
