Prashna Upanishad 3.5

यथा सम्रादेवाधिकृतान् विनियुङ्क्ते । एतन् ग्रामानोतान् ग्रामानधितिष्टस्वेत्येवमेवैष प्राण इतरान् प्राणान् पृथक् पृथगेव सन्निधत्ते पायूपस्थेऽपानं चक्षुःश्रोत्रे मुखनासिकाभ्यां प्राणः स्वयं प्रातिष्टते मध्ये तु समानः । एष ह्येतद्धुतमन्नं समं नयति तस्मादेताः सप्तार्चिषो भवन्ति

Meaning · English

Just as a king assigns officials to different villages, the life force distributes itself: the downward breath handles excretion and reproduction, the main breath handles the senses, and the balancing breath manages digestion.

The body's vitality is split into specialized roles. Apana governs the lower outlets of the body. Prana itself resides in the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. Samana stays in the center to distribute the nutrients from digested food. This work of Samana fuels the seven internal fires that keep the physical system running.

Think of a city's power grid. Some lines feed the streetlights, others power the water pumps, and a central transformer regulates the voltage for everyone. The different breaths act like these specific circuits, directing energy to different organs to keep the whole city functioning.
