Meaning · English
Her lashes are set like the feathers of an arrow, and her eyes stretch out to the ears. Their fruit is melting the calm in the mind of Shiva, destroyer of the cities. O bud on the mountain king's line, they play like Love's arrows drawn to the ear.
The poet turns the Goddess's eyes into a drawn bow. Three words carry the picture. Pakshma means eyelash. Garut means wing or feather, the fletching on an arrow's shaft. Akarna-akrishta means drawn back to the ear, the way an archer pulls the string before loosing. Smara is Love, the god of desire, whose arrows are the old image for longing. Take the clauses in order. Her eyes are long and reach toward her ears, and the lashes along them are like feathers on a shaft. Pulled to the ear, they look like Love's arrows at full draw. The poet names the target: the mind of Shiva, called the destroyer of the cities, a title for the one who burned the three cities of the demons. His mind is calm, praśama, a still and settled sweetness. The eyes aim to melt it, and the poet calls that melting their fruit, their purpose achieved. He closes by addressing her as the bud, the crest-ornament, of the mountain king's family, meaning she is born of the Himalaya. The teaching is that her eyes hold a power even the great ascetic does not stand apart from. The poet praises her beauty as the force that moves the one who burned Love to ash. He asks nothing of the listener here. He lets the picture stand.
A bowman draws the string back until his hand touches his cheek, and the feathers on the shaft sit level beside his ear. All the stored force is in that held moment. Her long eyes, lashes like feathers and reaching to the ears, are that drawn bow, aimed at Shiva's stillness.
