Beings Like Dream

Gaudapada Karika 4.68

As a being made of dream is born and dies, so all these beings are and are not. As a being made of magic is born and dies, so all these beings are and are not. As a being conjured up is born and dies, so all these beings are and are not.

Gaudapada says one sentence three times, with three different pictures. The key words come first. Jiva is the living being, from jiv, to live: the creature with a body and a name. Maya is magic, from ma, to measure out or make appear: a show that looks solid. Nirmitaka is the conjured thing, from nir and ma, shaped by a maker's mind. The sentence says a dream-being, a magic-being and a conjured being are all born and all die. Each shows up, acts, and goes. Then comes the turn: living beings are just like these, and so they are and are not. They are, because they are seen and they feel and suffer. They are not, because nothing in them holds up once you ask what they are apart from the mind that sees them. Verse 4.67 had just said waking things and dream things are each seen by the other, and neither carries a mark that settles which one exists. This verse draws the next step. If the test fails for both, being born and dying are part of the appearance too. Gaudapada's picture of dream, magic and conjuring is also used by the Buddhist thinkers of his time, such as Nagarjuna and Vasubandhu. The commentators read the repetition as pressing the point from three sides. The text asks the listener to see that birth and death are events inside the show, and to stop treating them as the final facts.

A child sees an elephant in a cloud. It takes shape, lifts its trunk, drifts and thins into nothing. The child saw it clearly, yet no elephant was ever made or lost. Beings are like that: plainly seen, arriving and leaving, with no birth that was more than appearance.

1. Tonight, lie down and recall one dream, or one vivid daydream. Notice how real it felt while it lasted. 2. Tomorrow, pick one thing that worries you, such as a bill or a quarrel. Ask once: where is this seen, and by whom? 3. When you meet a birth or a death this week, in news or in your family, stay with the sentence 'they are and are not' for one slow breath. Do not argue with it. Just hold it.

A grandmother holds her new grandchild on Saturday. On Tuesday she sits at a cousin's funeral. Both days feel total, and the two will not fit in her head together. Gaudapada's teaching gives her a way to hold them. Both are seen, both are felt, and both come and go like dream-beings. She does not have to decide which is the real one. So she can give each day its full feeling without gripping either as the last word. She may cry at the funeral and laugh at the cradle, and neither tears the other down. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: a dream feels fully real while it lasts, and only on waking does that change. The teaching has its limit. It does not take away her grief or make the empty chair lighter, and it does not replace the people who can sit with her. It gives her a wider frame in which the sorrow can sit, without telling her the sorrow is false.
