Meaning · English
This duality of grasped and grasper is only the quivering of mind. Mind itself has no object and is always unattached. So it has been taught.
Three words carry it. Spandita means a quivering or throb, from spand, to pulse. Grahya and grahaka are the thing grasped and the one who grasps, from grah, to seize; together they are the split into object and subject. Nirvishaya means without object, and asanga means unattached, from sanga, clinging or sticking. Gaudapada says the whole split between the one who grasps and what is grasped is only the mind throbbing. Seer and seen arise together in that throb. Then he says mind itself has no object of its own and is always unattached. It touches nothing and nothing sticks to it. The last clause, 'so it is taught,' tells the listener this is the teaching handed down, not a private guess. The question behind it is easy to ask. If nothing is ever born, why does a world of knowers and known keep appearing? Gaudapada answers that the appearance is the mind's own movement, and the movement leaves the mind unchanged. The commentators read the verse as saying that the mind is not bound by the objects it seems to meet. The thought also sits close to the Buddhist mind-only teaching of Vasubandhu's day, which likewise treats subject and object as constructed by mind. Gaudapada's goal is to loosen the sense that there is a grasper in here and a world out there to be grasped.
A pond at dusk. A breeze crosses it, and the ripples seem to chase one another, one catching up, one running away. Look closer and no ripple travels anywhere; only the water rises and falls. The chaser and the chased are the pond's own stirring, and the pond holds on to neither.
1. Today, when a thought like 'she ignored me' turns up, stop for ten seconds wherever you are. 2. Name its two parts: the one who feels slighted, and the thing that slighted. 3. Notice that both appeared together, inside the same thought, and that neither is standing in front of you. 4. Tonight, sit one minute before sleep and watch thoughts come and go without following any.
A woman rides the bus home after a family lunch, replaying a remark her sister-in-law made about her cooking. By the third replay there is a wounded woman and a careless critic, each very solid. The verse changes the moment in steps. She notices the remark was a few words, and the rest is the mind rerunning it. She sees that the wounded one and the critic are both made in the rerun and arrive together. She sees that the mind running the film is not itself damaged by it. Her breathing slows when she stops feeding the replay, which ordinary experience confirms: a mind left to rehearse a slight enlarges it. The text teaches that the mind is objectless and unattached, and she can borrow that as a way of looking. It does not take the sting out of the remark, it does not settle whether the remark was unfair, and it is no substitute for help if distress keeps returning and will not lift.
