What exists by imagined convention is not, in the highest truth. What exists by dependent convention is, and yet in the highest truth is not. The unborn, by imagined convention, is not even unborn in the highest truth. By dependent convention, by the coming-to-be that rests on other things, it is spoken of as born.
Four words carry this. Kalpita means imagined, from klp, to fashion or arrange: a thing the mind puts together, like a rope taken for a snake. Samvriti means convention, from sam-vr, to cover over: the shared, everyday way of speaking that covers the plainer fact. Paratantra means dependent, ruled by another: what appears only because of causes and conditions. Paramartha means the highest meaning, param (beyond) and artha (what a thing is). Gaudapada sorts our talk of existence into levels. The imagined thing has no standing at any level. The dependent thing is real in everyday dealings, but in the highest truth it is not. Then he turns to birth itself. At the highest level the self is not born, and the label "unborn" is also only a word set against the idea of birth. In ordinary speech, birth is still said, because things arise from conditions. The reason is a fair objection: if nothing is born, why does everyone speak of birth? He lets the daily language stand without letting it be the last word. These three levels echo the three natures of the Buddhist Yogacara thinkers, Vasubandhu among them. The commentators read Gaudapada's use of them in his own way. The listener is asked to keep the levels apart.
A rupee note buys tea because everyone agrees it will. The paper itself holds no worth. The shop is real, the tea is hot, and the worth is still an agreement. Everyday birth is like that worth: it works fully in daily dealings, and it is a way of speaking, not the last fact.
1. Today, when you handle a banknote, a ticket or a signed form, stop for ten seconds and note that it works because people agree it does. 2. When you say "born", "made" or "ended" about something, notice which level you are speaking at: the daily one or the final one. 3. In the evening, write one sentence about something that felt solid this morning and was only agreed upon.
A mother sits at the registry counter, filling in her newborn's name and date of birth. The clerk stamps the form and the child now exists on paper. Her hands shake a little as she writes. The verse speaks to that moment in steps. First, the form is a convention, and a necessary one: without it there is no school place, no vaccination record. Gaudapada's teaching grants this at once, since coming-to-be is spoken of through conditions. Second, the name and number are things people put together and agree on; the child is not made of them. Third, the teaching says that at the highest level even the word "unborn" is only a word set against birth. She can hold the paper carefully and not mistake it for the child. Ordinary experience confirms the first two steps: a lost certificate changes nothing about who the baby is. The verse does not promise that the paperwork gets easier, that fear for a newborn lifts, or that anyone should skip the clinic or the clerk's counter.
