Clinging to the Unreal

Gaudapada Karika 4.75

Meaning · English

Only the clinging to what is not real exists. Duality is not found there. Having understood that duality is absent, one is left without a cause, and is not born.

Three words carry it. Abhuta means what has not come to be, the unreal. Abhinivesha means clinging, from a root for settling into something and making a home in it. Nimitta means cause or sign, the ground a birth stands on. Gaudapada says the only thing that actually exists here is the clinging. The pairs it clings to, grasper and grasped, self and other, this and that, are not found when looked for. The world is not called a blank. What is denied is that the split has any standing apart from the mind that draws it, and the neighbouring verse calls it the throb of mind. Someone who has seen that duality is absent has lost the cause that kept rebirth going. Shankara reads that cause as the clinging itself. So the birth Gaudapada denies is the one made by wrong seeing. This follows his answer to the schools on cause and effect: if nothing real was ever produced, only the mistaken grip needs ending. The mind-only thinkers of his day, such as Vasubandhu, also spoke of grasper and grasped as mind's own play. Gaudapada's teaching goes further, to the unborn.

A coat hangs on a door in a dark bedroom and looks like a stranger standing there. The heart races, the breath stops. Someone switches on the lamp and there is only a coat. Nobody was removed. The fear lived only in the grip of the mistaken sight, as the clinging does in the verse.

1. Tonight, when a worry returns, ask once: what exactly am I gripping, and can I point to it right now in this room? 2. Write the worry in one plain sentence. Beside it write only what has actually happened, apart from what you imagine. 3. Read both lines slowly. Notice, for a minute, which one the tightness in your chest belongs to. 4. Put the paper away and do one small task with your hands.

A man lies awake at three in the morning. A manager's short reply to his email keeps replaying, and he has already pictured the dismissal, the rent, the shame. His heart is quick and his jaw is tight. Gaudapada's teaching would change the moment step by step. First, the picture is separated from the event: one short reply happened, the dismissal did not. Second, the tightness is seen as the hold itself, not as proof that the danger is real. Third, with no new fuel, the story is allowed to go quiet, and the body can begin to settle. Ordinary experience agrees that a worry often looks smaller in daylight than it did in the dark. The verse's own claim goes beyond any such calming. It says duality is absent and that one who knows this is not born again, and it offers that as the text's teaching. It does not promise that the job is safe, that the fear will not return, or that a person who cannot sleep for weeks needs no doctor.
