The Upward Breath

Prashna Upanishad 3.7

Meaning · English

The upward breath carries a person to a higher realm through virtuous deeds, to a lower realm through harmful ones, or back to human life.

The Udana is the specific energy associated with the upward movement of breath. It acts as a vehicle that carries a person onward. The direction of the journey depends on the quality of a person's actions. Good deeds lift the spirit to a positive plane, while bad deeds pull it down. Actions of a mixed nature result in a return to the earthly human experience.

A hot air balloon relies on the heat of its burner to rise. The balloon is like the upward breath, but the quality of the fuel determines whether it climbs toward the clouds, sinks toward the ground, or hovers in the middle air.
