Prashna Upanishad 3.8

Meaning · English

The sun is the outer life-force aiding the eyes. The earth's power supports the downward breath. Space between them is the balancing breath, and air is the diffusive breath.

The body's vital energies are mirrored in the physical universe. The energy that powers sight is linked to the sun. The force that handles elimination is tied to the earth. The energy that balances the internal systems corresponds to the open space of the atmosphere, while the force that circulates energy throughout the body is linked to the wind.

Think of a radio receiving a signal from a distant tower. The tower is the external source, while the radio is the internal receiver. Here, the sun and earth act as the towers, broadcasting the specific frequencies that the body's internal breathing forces tune into to function.
