The Cycle of Vitality
Prashna Upanishad 3.9
Meaning · English
Light (fire) is the upward breath, udāna. So one whose light, the body's heat, has died down goes to a new birth, their senses merged into the mind.
The upward breath, udāna, is tejas, the principle of light and fire, and the body's warmth is its presence, sustaining life. When a person dies, this warmth dies down, the mark that udāna is leaving. The powers of sight, hearing, and touch withdraw into the mind. This transition marks the end of one life, and the person goes on to a new birth with the senses absorbed in the mind.
A light bulb being unplugged from the wall. The glow vanishes instantly, and the electricity retreats back into the circuit. This maps to the vital energy leaving the physical body, causing the outward functions of the senses to shut down and pull back into the internal mental center.
