The Bearer of Qualities
Yoga Sutras 3.14
Meaning · English
What carries qualities stays with all of them: the ones that have settled, the ones now risen, and the ones not yet possible to name. That carrier is the thing itself.
Three words carry the sutra. Dharma is a quality or characteristic, from the root dhri, to hold. Dharmi is the one that holds the qualities, the bearer. Anupati means following along: the bearer goes with each quality and is not left behind by it. Patanjali sorts the qualities into three. Shanta ones have settled and gone quiet. Udita ones have risen and are active now. Avyapadeshya ones cannot yet be pointed to, because they have not shown themselves. So the sutra says that one underlying thing carries what has been, what is, and what is still to come. For the mind, the mind-field holds a mood that has passed, a thought now present, and a tendency that has not yet surfaced. All three belong to the same mind. Patanjali needs this after speaking of change in the mind and in the elements and senses. Change needs something that changes, or there is only a string of unconnected events. Vyasa's commentary takes the bearer as the common substance that stays one while its qualities pass through past, present and what is not yet manifest. The later commentators work this out at greater length but keep that basic picture.
A field through one year. Stubble from last harvest lies in it, green shoots stand in it now, and seed not yet sown waits in the barn. The field is one field throughout. The mind is the field, and its settled, risen and unrisen qualities are the stubble, the crop and the seed.
1. Once today, at a quiet moment, notice a mood or thought that is present, such as worry, boredom or contentment. 2. Recall a mood you had this morning or yesterday that has since gone. Notice that the same mind held it. 3. Ask what else this mind might hold later. Do not try to guess it. Only notice that you cannot name it yet. 4. Spend about two minutes on this and then carry on with your day.
