Lightning, Then the Blink

Kena Upanishad 4.4

Meaning · English

Here is the pointer to it, as it concerns the gods: that which flashed out in the lightning, and the closing of the eyes in a blink. It was like that, sudden and then gone.

Three words carry this teaching. Adesha means a pointer or instruction, something that directs your attention without holding the thing itself. Vidyut means lightning, from a root meaning to shine. Adhidaivatam means 'concerning the divinities', the side of the teaching that speaks of the gods. Brahman, in the Upanishads, is the one reality behind all things, the power the gods themselves depend on. The teacher gives two quick pictures: a flash of lightning and the shutting of an eye. Brahman cannot be pointed at as an object, so the text points by how it was met. The gods glimpsed it, and it was over before they could grasp it. The reason given is that Brahman is not something held and kept. It lights up and the mind cannot hold the light. Shankara reads the small word after each image as 'like', so the verse says: it was like a lightning flash, like a blink. The teacher ends by turning the pupil toward that glimpse and asking him to remember how swift and complete it was. Nothing here says Brahman is lightning. The verse says only how it showed itself to the gods.

A silver fish turns once near the surface of a pond. You catch the flash, you see it, and the water is plain again. The fish was never the light. The flash is only how it was glimpsed, as the lightning is for the gods.

1. At dusk today, stand at a window for two minutes and watch for one quick thing: a bird crossing, a light switching on. 2. Notice the moment it appears and the moment it is gone. Notice whether you reach after it. 3. Once before bed, when a good thought or mood passes, let it pass without chasing it. Say quietly, 'that was seen.'

A farmer walks home across his fields in a night storm. The path is black. Lightning cracks and the whole field stands out for an instant: the ditch, the fence post, the gap in the hedge. Then the dark closes again. He does not stand waiting for the next flash. He shuts his eyes, keeps the picture, and walks by it, step after step, until the next one comes. The verse changes how he treats that instant. He does not mistake the flash for the field, and he does not mourn its going. He takes what it gave. Ordinary experience agrees that a bright image lingers behind closed eyes and can be walked by for a few steps. The verse does not promise that the glimpse will return when wanted, or that the way home will be lit. It does not cure fear of the dark, and a man who is ill or lost still needs help from others. The Kena says only that Brahman was met in this sudden way.
