Akasha Known by Elimination

By elimination, sound is the sign of akasha.
The question is simple: whose quality is sound? For Vaisheshika, every quality, or guna, must sit in some substance, the way a colour sits in a cloth. The school counts nine substances. The sutras just before this one have already ruled out earth, water, fire and air, and then the self and the mind. Kanada's claim is that whatever is left over, parishesha, must be the bearer. That bearer is akasha, often rendered 'ether': a ninth substance known only through what it carries. Its sign, or linga, the mark from which it is inferred, is sound. Shankara Mishra's commentary lays out the steps. Sound is a quality, because, like colour, it is caught by just one outer sense, here the ear. A quality needs a home. None of the eight other substances fits. So there is one more. He draws two consequences. Nothing shows that akasha has parts, so it is held to be eternal. Sound can arise anywhere, so akasha is held to be everywhere.
A jacket is left behind after a class. The teacher asks each student in turn, and every one says it is not theirs. Jackets do not arrive on their own, so the teacher concludes it belongs to someone not on the list. Sound is the jacket: a quality that must have an owner. With every listed substance refusing it, the owner must be one more.
Today's physics gives sound a home that Kanada ruled out. Sound is a pressure wave travelling through a medium such as air, water or a solid, and it does not cross a vacuum. So the bearer physics names is close to the air Vaisheshika rejected, and akasha has no modern match. Nor is akasha the 'luminiferous ether' of nineteenth-century physics, a medium proposed for light and later abandoned. The logic holds up better than the conclusion. Reasoning by elimination is valid, but only if the list of options is complete and each rejection is correct; the rejection of air is exactly what modern acoustics would contest. The deeper premise, that every quality needs a substance to bear it, is still argued in metaphysics, where bundle theorists hold that a thing may be nothing over and above its qualities.
