The Signs of Time

Vaisheshika Sutras 2.2.6

The thought 'later' about what is later, the thought 'at the same time', the thought 'it took long', and the thought 'it was quick': these are the signs of time.

Nobody sees time. So how does Vaisheshika know it is there at all? By its signs. A linga, or sign, is a mark from which something unseen is inferred, the way smoke points to fire. Kanada lists four: our judgments that one thing is 'later', that two things happen 'together', that something took 'long', and that something was 'quick'. Shankara Mishra's commentary adds that 'later' brings its partner 'earlier' with it. 'Together' means within one and the same turn of the sun. His argument runs like this. An old man counts as earlier than a young one because he was born many more turns of the sun ago. That earlierness is a real feature, so it needs a cause. Colour, smell or touch cannot supply it. Something must link a body here with the sun's movement far away, so it must reach everywhere. Space, akasha, cannot be that link, or striking one drum would sound every drum. What remains is a separate, all-pervading substance: time.

Two candles stand on a table, one burned much lower than the other. You watched neither being lit, yet you say at once which was lit first. Nothing on the table is labelled 'earlier'. You read it from a difference in the wax. For Vaisheshika, our everyday sense of earlier, later, long and quick works the same way: a visible trace from which an invisible time is inferred.

Modern philosophy still argues over the question this answers. Substantivalists, following Newton, treat time as something real in its own right. Relationalists, following Leibniz, say time is nothing over and above the ordering of events. Vaisheshika sits close to the first camp. Physics adds a complication. In relativity, whether two distant events happen 'together' depends on the observer's motion, so a single universal 'now' does not hold, though it works well at everyday speeds and distances. Kanada's time is a philosophical posit reached by inference, not a measured quantity. Psychology confirms that felt slowness and quickness shift with attention and mood, which suggests these signs are partly about the mind. Whether time truly flows, or only seems to, remains open.
