Meaning · English
I take this face of yours to be the chariot of Kama, four-wheeled: the two earrings, reflected in her shining cheeks, make the wheels. Mounted on it, the great hero Kama takes up arms against the earth-chariot of Shiva, lord of the hosts, whose wheels are sun and moon, ready for battle.
The poet sees her face as a war chariot, and he works the picture out piece by piece. Two key words open it. Manmatha is a name of Kama, the god of love, and means the one who stirs the mind. Ratha is a chariot. The face is Kama's ratha. Ganda means cheek, and pratiphalita means reflected back. Each earring shines on her cheek and is mirrored there, so one earring shows twice. Two earrings and two reflections give four wheels, and a chariot of four wheels is what the poet names. Then the opposing side. Shiva, called here the lord of his hosts, has made ready for battle with a chariot that is the earth itself, its two wheels the sun and the moon. Kama, called a great hero, climbs into her face and takes the field against him. Why is this taught here? The verses before and after it praise her ears, eyes, nose and brows one feature at a time. This one asks what her face is for. The poem's answer is that it is where Kama's power rides, and that power is directed at Shiva himself. The face is so lovely that it arms even the god of desire. Lakshmidhara's reading, as the commentators carry it, takes such pictures as praise of her beauty and not as a story of conflict. The verse asks nothing of the listener except to look as the poet looks, and to see in the face a whole world's worth of grandeur.
Picture a polished brass lamp beside a window, the flame showing once in the metal and again in the glass behind it. One light becomes two bright rounds. So each earring, caught again in the cheek, doubles into a pair, and the poet reads those four bright circles as chariot wheels.
