Meaning · English

Knowing that there is no cause, that this is true, and finding no cause anywhere apart from it, one reaches the state without sorrow, without craving, without fear.

Three words carry the verse. Animitta means without cause: a (not) and nimitta (a mark, a occasion, a cause). Hetu is a reason or cause, the thing said to bring something about. Pada means a step or a standing place, and here a state one arrives at. Gaudapada says that when a person truly knows nothing is caused, and finds no cause apart from this knowing, they reach a state with three absences: no shoka (grief), no kama (craving), no abhaya... that is, no fear. The clauses run in order. First, knowing: the no-cause is taken as true. Second, looking for a cause elsewhere and not finding one. Third, the state that follows. Why teach this here? The fourth chapter argues that nothing is ever born, so there is no chain of cause and effect to trust or dread. Grief mourns what was lost, craving reaches for what is missing, fear expects what may come. Each leans on the idea that things arise and pass because of causes. Shankara reads the verse as describing the one who has seen non-duality and so has nothing left to long for or flee. Some of this reasoning sits close to Nagarjuna's arguments against causation, and the Karika does not hide that. It asks the listener to test whether any cause can actually be found.

A child fears a shape in the dark bedroom, sure something stands in the corner. Someone switches on the lamp and it is only a coat on a hook. The fear did not need to be argued away. Once no cause for it can be found, it has nowhere to stand.

1. Tonight, pick one small worry that is running in your head, such as a message not answered or a bill due. 2. Write down the cause you believe is behind it, in one plain sentence. 3. Ask slowly whether that cause is something you have seen, or something you have assumed. Take two minutes. 4. Notice whether the worry loosens when the assumed part is set aside. Stop there and do nothing else with it.

A woman sits in a hospital corridor while her father is in a scan. Her mind builds a chain: the cough last month, the missed check-up, what the result will say, how the house will feel empty. Each link feels like a cause leading to the next, and her chest is tight with fear that has no result yet to stand on. The verse, read as the Karika's teaching, asks her to look for the cause of that fear and see that the chain is made of guesses. Step one: she names what is actually known, which is that a scan is under way. Step two: she sees the rest is expected, not seen. Step three: the tightness has less to hold. Ordinary experience agrees that fear usually feeds on stories about what comes next. The verse does not promise that her father is well, that grief will not come if the news is bad, or that she can skip speaking to the doctor. It names a state beyond sorrow, craving and fear as the Karika's goal, not a thing to be forced in a corridor.
