Going Out of Sight

Meaning · English

Holding the mind steadily on the form of the body halts the body's power to be taken in by others. Then the eye's light no longer meets it, and the body passes out of sight.

Three words carry the sutra. Samyama is the three inner steps, steadying, unbroken attention and absorption, practised together on one thing. Rupa is form: the shape, colour and outline by which a body is known. Grahya-shakti is the power of being grasped. Graha is a seizing, and shakti is a capacity. Seeing, in this account, is a meeting. The body must offer itself to be grasped, and the eye must send its light toward it. Antardhana is the result, a putting out of view. The whole sense runs in order. Samyama on the body's own form holds back its capacity to be grasped. Because that capacity is held, the light of the eye finds nothing to meet, and the body is not seen. Nothing is destroyed. Only the meeting is stopped. Patanjali gives this in a run of results, each tied to one object of samyama. Here the object is the practitioner's own body. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, reads it just so: when the body's form is held, its perceptibility is blocked, and with no contact between it and the eye's light, the yogi is unseen. The later commentators do not differ in any way that changes this.

A coin lies at the bottom of a dark drawer. It has not gone anywhere, and your eyes are open, yet you do not see it, because no light is carrying its shape to you. The sutra puts the body in the drawer: it is still there, but the meeting that makes seeing has been cut.

1. Once today, sit for three minutes and look at one hand. Notice its outline, its colour, the light on it. 2. Notice that seeing needs two things at once: a form that shows itself and an eye that receives it. 3. Later, in a busy room, notice who or what you pass without seeing. Ask what meeting did not happen. 4. Do not try to vanish. Only observe how seeing is made.
