Knowing When Life Ends

Yoga Sutras 3.22

Meaning · English

Action bears fruit in two ways: some quickly, some slowly. Full concentration on these two kinds gives knowledge of the end of life. The same knowledge also comes from omens.

Three words carry the sutra. Karma is action, and the fruit that action leaves behind. Sopakrama means action that is already under way, with its result close. Nirupakrama means action that is not yet under way, its result waiting. Samyama is the three inner steps of holding attention, steadying it and absorbing it, practised together on one object. Aparanta is the far end, which here means death. Arishta is a sign or omen. The sutra says that action ripens at two speeds. Patanjali teaches that when samyama rests on these two kinds of action, the end of the body becomes known. He adds that omens can give the same knowledge by another road. The question comes from the verses before it. Each one names an object for samyama and the knowledge it gives. This one takes the span of a life as its object. It rests on the earlier teaching that action leaves results that shape what comes next. Vyasa's commentary compares the two kinds to a wet cloth. Spread out, it dries fast. Bundled up, it dries slowly. He takes the omens to be signs of death that appear beforehand. The commentators differ little here.

A handful of seeds pressed into one bed. Some sprout within days. Others lie in the dark soil until the rains come. Nothing shows which is which from above. Actions are like the seeds, some bearing fruit soon and some late, and the sutra says samyama can read the timing.

1. Tonight, sit for five quiet minutes and recall one choice from years ago whose result only arrived recently. 2. Then recall one choice whose result came the same day. 3. Notice how different the two delays felt, and how little you saw of the slow one when it began. 4. This week, watch for small signs that come before an outcome, such as tiredness before illness. Only notice them. Do not try to predict anything.
